HD HS Workshop

Together with LMC, MBF Filmtechnik hosted the ARRI D20/21 and HD High-speed Workshop on its premises on 26/4/08.
Shown alongside the new ARRI D21 was the Phantom HD camera with an Antelope high-speed software solution developed by LMC, which makes the HD recording of up to 1,500 images possible.
ARRI brought the first digital "film style" camera on the market in the shape of the D 20 High Definition. Consequently, the predecessor to the D21 was developed further in many small details to produce the D21. Compared to conventional HD cameras, the D 20/21 has a sensor which corresponds to the S 35mm format in size. It thereby results in an effect that is very close to the 35mm film. Furthermore, it has an optical viewfinder. In combination with Sony's HDCam Recorder SWR- 1, it provides an - until now - almost unrivalled image quality that far exceeds the abilities of the conventional HD camcorder. It combines the advantages of HD production with the precision and reliability of a modern film camera.
Our consultant Matthias Uhlig from MBF Hamburg even managed to convince the film cameramen of how close working with the D21 comes to 35mm.

The attractions at this workshop were, however, impressive high-speed recordings using the Phantom camera, whose chip is also based on the classic 35mm format and thereby also makes it useable for 35mm optics. Objects falling into water, splintered glass, everything immediately controllable in HD format after the recording by means of the instant replay function. High speed can hardly be any easier.
The public service broadcasters were also convinced by it too, as four of the systems were constantly deployed at the football European Championships.
